What is AEO, and why it matters now

AEO means answer engine optimization: making AI assistants name your business when customers ask them for a recommendation.

Customers ask AI, and AI answers with names

People now type questions like “Who is the best family law attorney in Plano?” into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google. Instead of ten links, they get one written answer that names three or four businesses. Most people call one of those names. If you are not in the answer, you are not considered.

How AI decides who to name

AI assistants search the web, read what they find, and repeat what looks trustworthy and specific. They favour businesses that:

  • Are easy to read. Their site lets AI crawlers in and states plainly who they are, what they do and where.
  • Answer the question. They have pages that directly answer what customers ask, in the first sentence.
  • Are confirmed elsewhere. They appear on the directories, review sites and publications AI already trusts in that field.

How AEO differs from SEO

Most of it overlaps, because AI tools still read the web. The difference is the target and the measurement. SEO aims at ranking pages in Google’s list; AEO aims at being named inside the answer, and is measured by asking the assistants directly and reading what they say.

What the autopilot does about it

It works on all three: it fixes how readable your site is, publishes pages that answer your customers’ questions, and gives you a checklist of the sites AI cites in your field. Then it re-asks the questions every week so you can see what changed. How it works.

What it can’t do

Nobody controls what AI assistants say. We cannot promise a specific answer or position, and we never use tricks like fake reviews or spam posts. What we can do is make your business the easiest one to recommend, and show you honestly whether it is working.
